Land Acknowledgement.
I want to take a moment to acknowledge Turtle Island, the land to which my family are settlers of and where I daily benefit from. The land where there is a painful colonial past and present. The land where so much of this egregious truth has been hidden, denied and perpetuated by systems that have failed and continue to fail.
I acknowledge that this land was inhabited and taken care of by Indigenous peoples for centuries, far before other people groups arrived and violently took it from them.
I especially want to acknowledge the Traditional Territories of the Ojibwe, The Anishinaabe and Mississaugas of the New Credit whose territory I reside, work, play and rest on. As a colonial settler, I acknowledge my personal responsibility to learn the truth and to make it known. I understand that this is a life long process and am committed to continually educating myself, to honour and take care of this land, to experience the discomfort that comes from this country’s painful past, present and future.
